What is the PE and Sport Premium?

The PE and sport premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils through sustainable developments.

The government is providing additional funding of £300 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding — provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport — will be allocated to primary school head teachers.

The government suggests schools can use the funding to:

  • hire specialist PE teachers
  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
  • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
  • run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • run sports activities with other schools

Our five priorities

Sporting opportunities are actively encouraged and developed at The Federation of Boldmere Schools and our children participate in weekly lessons, after school clubs and a range of competitions. Our school PE and sport development priorities are based on our school context and identified pupil need.

  1. 01

To increase the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity (including disadvantaged pupils).

  2. 02

To increase the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.

  3. 03

To increase confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.

  4. 04

To broaden the experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.

  5. 05

To increase participation in competitive sport.

We believe that physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability, emotional health, mental well being and interaction with others. Through sport and other physical activities our children will learn about their responsibilities both as individuals and members of groups and teams. They learn to cooperate and to compete fairly, understanding their own and other’s roles.

How we do it

By the time children leave school in year 6, our aims are that through physical education we teach and develop physical competence, an appreciation of skilled and creative performances, understanding of basic principles of ‘fair play’ and improve inter personal skills and healthy lifestyles. We achieve this by:

  • following a broad and balanced PE curriculum fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum
  • developing a whole curriculum for supporting children to make informed choices about healthy living and lifestyles
  • giving every child the opportunity to swim at least 25m
  • developing the fitness of the individual, by ensuring a good pace in lessons and incorporating fitness activities into physical education lessons as appropriate
  • integrating, where possible, into other curriculum areas, for example, the use of athletics data in maths & ICT
  • developing programmes that meet the needs of all the children, providing equal opportunities, making allowances for children with disabilities and medical conditions, taking into account children with special needs, through modified classroom programmes
  • involving the community where possible, for example, Sports Day, clubs, inter-school matches, outside coaching personnel and resources
  • providing enjoyable experiences, where positive attitudes of sensitivity, leadership, co-operation, competition and tolerance may develop

Review of last year’s spend and key achievements (2023 to 2024)

Successful implementation on PE Hub lesson ideas to support staff teaching PE lessons.

Key indicators: 3

Impact
Children at Boldmere Junior School were able to receive higher quality PE lessons, with improving their confidence and knowledge when teaching PE. Additional support on plans built staff CPD on skills, enabling appropriate challenge and support where necessary.
Comments
Staff will continue to use PE hub planning to support their PE lessons. Feedback from staff has been positive as this has supported their CPD, improving their knowledge and confidence when teaching PE.

Successfully using the “Leadership Academy” program to train 5 of our Year 6 sports leader.

Key indicators: 1, 2

Impact
Sports Ambassadors that participated in the “Leadership Academy” program worked with our in-school PE teacher to deliver coaching session to children at break time and lunch time, ensuring more of our children are active throughout the day. These children successfully ran their own events due to this training and additional work with in-house PE teacher.
Comments
We will continue to use the “Leadership Academy” program this year, as well as children working closely with our in-house PE teacher due to the success this year. We will modify it slightly so that each sports ambassador leads their own ‘team’, ensuring more children have the opportunity to deliver sessions under the guidance of the sports ambassador. This also means more children will be active due to more child leaders in school.

A huge success of 2023/24 academic year was the new format of Sports Afternoon.

Key indicators: 1, 4, 5

Impact
The new format of Sports Afternoon allowed all children to participate in all events, as opposed to one or two. This meant more active children, who competed for their house for a longer period of time. Feedback from both staff and parents was incredible as the new revamped format allowed all children to be active longer.
Comments
Based off staff and parental feedback, we will continue with the same format of sports afternoon, especially as it gave a real “community vibe”. As one parent fed back, “It was excellent to see the kids always active and there were lots of smiles. Also allowed children to show off their talents in different activities to normal sports day.”
